Open Air & Festival – Music, Bands and DJs for the Big Stage

An Open Air or Festival is the epitome of large stages, big bands, and a huge, celebrating audience. Hardly any event brings together so many people in one place to experience music together. From classical festivals to jazz events to rock, pop, and techno festivals – open airs are as diverse as music itself. The fascination lies in the mix of live performances by well-known headliners, the opportunity for newcomer bands to present themselves to a broad audience, and the special atmosphere outdoors: sun, rain, dust, and dancing mix into a festival experience that remains unforgettable.

What is an Open Air or Festival?

An Open Air refers to a music event under the open sky, while a festival usually encompasses several days, multiple stages, and a diverse mix of music genres. The variety ranges from Rock and Pop to Jazz and Electro.

Difference to a Concert: While a concert is often focused on just one band or act, an Open Air usually includes a whole lineup of different musicians. It's not just about music, but also about shared experience, camping, culinary offerings, and community building.

Well-Known Examples in Germany:

  • Southside or Hurricane Festival – renowned for Rock, Pop and Alternative music
  • Rock am Ring – legendary headliner Rock event with international stars
  • Fusion Festival – Electro Open Air with cult status and underground atmosphere
  • Jazz Open Stuttgart – international event for Jazz audiences
  • Klassik am See – Open Air with symphony orchestra for Classical music lovers

Music Styles & Artists for Open Airs

Open Airs cover the entire spectrum of music and offer the perfect experience for every taste:

  • Classical & Symphony Orchestra: Elegant summer concerts in natural settings with classical works and modern interpretations
  • Rock & Pop: From world-star headliners to local cover bands creating an exuberant atmosphere
  • Techno & Electro: Star DJs, EDM icons, and house acts transform festivals into massive dance floors
  • Jazz Festivals: From intimate combo performances to big bands and virtuoso soloists
  • Party Bands & Local Newcomers: Especially at city or theme festivals, tomorrow's stars are born

👉 Particularly typical for Open Airs is the mix of established headliners and emerging newcomers. While big names attract visitor masses, slots for smaller bands offer a unique stage before thousands of people – a career springboard that hardly exists elsewhere.

Sequence and Phases of a Festival

A festival or Open Air day follows an almost universal concept with clearly recognizable program phases that provide visitors with a diverse experience:

  • Opening / Afternoon: Local bands, emerging artists, and first DJ sets warm up the audience for the evening
  • Main Time in the Evening: Well-known live bands or star DJs create the day's highlight with amazing atmosphere
  • Finale / Night Program: DJs, Electro lounges, or Rock parties let the night wind down
  • Side Program: Food trucks, workshops, and show activities complete the festival experience

Weather Special Feature: Unpredictable weather makes Open Airs an authentic experience. Thunderstorms or rain rarely cause cancellations – on the contrary: the famous "Mud Parties" like at Southside Festival have long been part of the festival myth and create unforgettable memories.

Differences to Folk Festival or Club

Open Airs and festivals differ significantly from other event formats through their musical focus:

  • Folk Festival: Music complements traditional celebrations with rides and culinary offerings, but is not at the center of the event
  • Club: Offers an intimate setting with focus on DJ or live music specifically for regulars and scene connoisseurs
  • Open Air/Festival: Music is the central element – all visitors come exclusively for the acts and the communal music experience

Opportunities for Bands and Musicians

A performance at a festival is far more than just an ordinary gig and offers musicians unique opportunities for their career development:

Newcomer bands can gain thousands of new fans through a single successful festival performance and dramatically increase their recognition. Support acts performing as opening bands often become sought-after insider tips, leading to further booking inquiries.

For established headliners, festivals mean significant reach expansion through festival clips, live streams, and social media buzz that extends far beyond the actual event.

Success Stories: Many of today's major bands once started on small Open Air stages as unknown newcomers. DJs also strategically use Open Air festivals to make their sound go viral and gain international attention. The audience is more experimental than in clubs and open to new sounds.

Costs for Musicians at Open Airs

Fees for festival performances vary significantly depending on popularity, stage size, and event type:

  • Newcomer Bands: 500–2,000 €, often including travel costs and accommodation
  • Mid-Size Acts: 5,000–15,000 € depending on reach and popularity
  • Headliner Bands: 50,000–250,000 € per performance at major festivals
  • Star DJs: 100,000 €+ for international stars at premium events

👉 Local and smaller Open Airs often have more limited budgets and therefore frequently book regional bands, acoustic duos, or party musicians for several hundred to a few thousand euros. However, these events provide valuable stage experience for aspiring artists and the chance to present themselves to new audiences.
